In a surprise to no one, Tomase does not think Pete Abe should apologize. The Tomase defense was mind roasting. That guy’s a real piece of garbage. Tomase’s anger in how he’s been treated by the fans after his colossal fuck up comes through in his defense of Pete Abe and that makes me very, very happy.
It’s really backwards thinking. Essentially “He deals with a lot of hate and backlash and maybe he took it out on the wrong guy but he’s allowed to be frustrated by fractions”. Except of course the guy Pete Abe went after didn’t actually tweet anything to Pete Abe. He responded to a 985 tweet Pete was mentioned in and Pete must have been trolling the replies looking for someone to pounce on.
Correct on both counts. The guys tweet on Price was about as inoffensive and not at all personal as the the internet gets. It was a strange one for Pete to jump ugly on.
No matter how many media members tell me Tomase is a great guy, I’ll never believe it. The guy just keeps showing himself as a thin skinned piece of crap.
March 16, 2017 at 12:37 pm #94055No matter how many media members tell me Tomase is a great guy, I’ll never believe it.
You can really never trust when they say this about anybody, not just Tomase. Yeah, every once in a while, you’ll get guys whispering that John Dennis (for example) is a real dickhead.
If you’re really a “nice guy”, it shows in how you ethically conduct yourself in your profession, and your readers/viewers can see it for themselves. Nobody has to tell me that Mike Reiss or Chris Price is a nice guy. I can just tell without any help.
If it quacks like a douchebag, it’s a douchebag.

Not that every team wouldn’t want good corners, but they’ve had 2 different teams from their division make the SB the past 2 seasons and the other team also finished ahead of them last year.
They probably won’t be a contender whether they have Butler or not.
So why not build a younger deeper roster, especially in a supposedly deep CB draft?
March 16, 2017 at 1:48 pm #94061March 16, 2017 at 1:50 pm #94062Said it the other day and I stand by it – if they let him walk for less than the #11 (or equivalent) I’ll be annoyed.
Edit – not that I matter…

March 16, 2017 at 1:57 pm #94064March 16, 2017 at 2:17 pm #94065I’m a tad perplexed by the Butler thing myself. With Ryan gone I guess the plan would be to put Eric Rowe or Maybe Cyrus Jones out there as the #2. Both those guys were healthy scratches last season.
Sure Rowe got better as the year went on but he wasn’t close to taking playing time away from Butler. Then again after beating the SeaHags in the Superbowl they cut both starting corners and didn’t skip a beat
March 16, 2017 at 2:18 pm #94066Manish reports today that Mo Wilkerson may soon be borrowing mumus from LJ:
Several scouts at Temple Pro Day in Philadelphia last week were aghast upon seeing a bloated Wilkerson, who appears to have let himself go after the worst season of his career. Wilkerson, who starred at Temple before the Jets took him in the first round in 2011, looked like he had been plucked from the nearest buffet, according to people in attendance.
That’s a shame. 😆
Kind of ironic that Wilkerson skipped a team meeting last season where they had a birthday cake for him.
It’s also got to be encouraging for the Jets that they gave Wilkerson a big contract and he’s followed that up with his worst season and an offseason eating spree.
March 16, 2017 at 2:28 pm #94067March 16, 2017 at 2:50 pm #94068Anyone actually watching? Saw on a gamecast Princeton missed a tying shot at the buzzer, how bad was it?
Off the rim. Close.
March 16, 2017 at 2:50 pm #94069Anyone actually watching? Saw on a gamecast Princeton missed a tying shot at the buzzer, how bad was it?
I watched due to financial investment
Shot was open, but didn’t have a chance.
March 16, 2017 at 2:51 pm #94070Meanwhile, the Jets have gaping holes at center, tight end, cornerback and wide receiver. They need depth at every position except perhaps the defensive line. They have virtually an entire roster to assemble. The Jets are in this predicament because of their mighty 2015 spending spree. They acquired Brandon Marshall, Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie, Ryan Fitzpatrick and others in a veteran splurge so effective that it almost nabbed them a playoff appearance. GM Mike Maccagnan was hailed as the latest Jets genius, leading him to double down on expensive old-timers like Ryan Clady and Matt Forte in 2016. Who would have thought that a team of pricey veteran 30-somethings would get old so suddenly? Well, everyone would have thought that but the Jets, who put zero effort into developing prospects to replace the mercenaries.
“…so effective that it almost nabbed them a playoff appearance.”
😆
March 16, 2017 at 2:58 pm #94071I heard Greg Cosell talking about the difference between Gilmore and Butler. He thinks Gilmore is more suited to match up with the big “x” receivers one on one whereas with Malcolm they have to double that guy and leave Malcolm on a smaller guy so Gilmore gives them more coverage versatility. I hadn’t heard that before, found it interesting.
As to what they are doing with Butler I don’t think it’s really all that difficult to understand. They’ve done it over and over again. They get to the point where they either decide they can’t match up or that they don’t want the guy back and they cash in for max value. It’s part of what allows them to cycle in more young guys for the next wave of talent. If they get 32 back for Malcolm I think that’s plenty for one year of him.
It’s definitely going to hurt as a fan though. Love that guy.
March 16, 2017 at 3:09 pm #94072March 16, 2017 at 3:11 pm #94073Reiss speculates that the Pats’ reluctance to throw money at Butler is due to off-field concerns. That doesn’t seem very Reissy. I wonder what the story is there.
You’re right. He’s apologized. 😆

March 16, 2017 at 3:22 pm #94075So if it is Butler and a 3rd for Cooks and a 4th, I think the Pats got the worse end of the trade. Maybe Butler turns out to be a crazy person, but he was a hell of a player for 2 seasons (+1 play).
I’ll smash things if that’s what happens.
March 16, 2017 at 3:25 pm #94076Just heard some IT hottaker on IT hottaker crime. One guy, amidst belly laughs at his own cleverness-
“The Friars are like the Red Sox, close but no cigar!”
*flat monotone* “The Red Sox have won three world series in the last 12 years” (I give him credit for getting this right without their normal “When did the Red Sox beat the Cardinals, 2001? No, that was 9/11 the Yankees won that year, had to have been 2000”)
“ha ha..I meant before!”
*crickets* “That doesn’t make sense”

I’m echoing your earlier question about why the Saints are so hot for this guy.
Tight cap space, a lot of needs, and if they don’t want to give up 11 they’ll have to give up multiple later picks to make it worth the Pats’ while. Why not just use your own picks considering the situation your team is in?

23 year old Cooks has maybe 6-7 years of effective high level play. Butler is what? 3?

My “fear” is that they won’t have to give up multiple picks, because they had a handshake wink wink (Dennis pic) deal.
But if they can get him for Cooks straight up essentially maybe they like that better than picking a few others?
March 16, 2017 at 3:47 pm #94084Was anybody listening to WEEI around three? I caught it in the middle, but it sounded like Dale was reading a Q&A with a reporter or a Twitter conversation that seemed to indicate Butler was very close to signing in New Orleans. The only thing I can find is Rapoport’s Tweet from this morning saying that there is “momentum toward finalizing a deal.”
Come back, Regular Brian.
My agenda is truth.

If they don’t offer #11, does that mean the Pats can just keep him at the 3.9 and not have to match whatever it is New Orleans offers?
Pats can match. If they don’t, they get the first.

They can do a sign and trade for less (or more) if a team was really interested. I don’t think they’ll ever get 11 for Butler. Love the guy but despite being only a 3 year vet he got a late start and is already 27. Never the fastest guy to begin with.

I just don’t think its going to work like that. I think New Orleans was never going to give up 11 and is only negotiating with Butler on the hopes (or perhaps knowledge) its possible the Pats would be amenable to less. They never formally extend the deal if the Pats aren’t. Just my opinion. Can’t see 11 being in play.
March 16, 2017 at 4:08 pm #94094March 16, 2017 at 4:15 pm #94095My point being, can that be the line in the sand per the CBA? We aren’t forced to match 4 years/50 mil or whatever because you owe us a first. Malcolm, enjoy your 3.9
No it’s either or.
If he actually signs an offer sheet the 3.9 is no longer in play. He either plays for the new team and they give up the pick or he plays for the Pats on the same deal because they matched.
That’s why as Pass says he probably won’t actually sign an offer sheet because they’d NO is locked into giving up #11 once his pen hits the paper.

If New Orleans actually signed him to that then the Pats would have to match or get 11. But what I am saying is no matter what they’ve talked about in principle with Butler they’ll never put that in front of him. They’ll say okay let’s see if we can work out a deal with NE and we will get back to you. The agent knows it’ll have to be a sign and trade if they work something out.
If the Pats tell New Orleans no its 11 or nothing then yes, he’s likely back here for 3.9 as NO says we’re done. I hope I’m wrong I’d love to get 11.

Albert refers to him simply as “Deuce” – like equals.
March 16, 2017 at 4:20 pm #94098Russini is now apparently blowing Jonathan because she appears to have a source here. She says she was told New England told her to “be patient” when reports were that Butler was close to the parameters of a deal with NO.
That says to me the Pats are keeping their options open to say hey Malcolm we could live with that deal, no trade.
