Obviously I don’t give two shits about the guy and have no interest in the pile on but it would make Buckley stand at attention like a twenty year old in flannel to know Sandoval’s last 7 years of WAR are equal to Yaz’ 1967.

Willie shifted his weight on his feet, sighed, and lit another of the regular Marlboros he had stashed in a Marlboro Lights package. “Big fucking hole,” he murmured to himself.
He knew what was coming. Ray Flynn had confided that the old Garden would soon be the next Hotel Madison, but a deal was in place to build a newer, shinier one on the same block. Willie hated the idea. The new buildings were all about lights and open space. The Garden he grew up with was built in the Twenties with nearly all manual labor. The hallways and corridors were crowded and confining, taking unannounced turns and dotted with unmarked doors to small off-the-map rooms where real business could get done. The design for the new one had arrows painted on the walls to tell people if they were headed up or down. It made Willie laugh. Bitterly.
But it was going to happen. In ’92, Billy gave a Southie handshake to the deal — which everyone knows meant pony up more cash. But the Canucks (or were they western New York? No matter) missed the message and Billy had to tell them “go screw” in Latin and killed the bill in the legislature.
Give the Jacobs’ credit, though. They finally read the road signs and after some shadow boxing the deal was done before St. Pat’s Day. Now the freaking steam shovels were trying to dig a hole for a building that would rise higher than the Orange Line El. Nobody knew where the trains were supposed to go.
Willie turned away from the wind and towards Sullivan’s. When he shook out another cigarette, he thought briefly of Jackie and the promises he’d made to quit. Or was it share? Again, no matter.
Sullivan’s Tap was in its usual 2:30 mode. Glancing down the long bar, Willie could see almost nobody. That’s how he liked it.
The old Garden had drawn a certain crowd. Boxing fans. Wrestling yahoos. Hockey screamers. They brought in money and didn’t really affect the character of the North Station area. Actually, it was good cover for the occasional chance meeting with a disgruntled player, unhappy jobber, or ambitious team exec to tell their side of the story to the one guy who could make sure it made it into print – or not. At places like the Tap, there weren’t any waitresses or bus boys to linger a little too long near your table. If, like a rookie, you sat at one anyway. The corner at the far end was Willie’s. Sometimes guys waiting in line to piss passed a little time with him. Perfectly natural.
Willie held up three fingers to the bartender down the other end. He’d already filed his Sunday column, so why not enjoy life? A sip or two later, his mind wandered to what wasn’t perfectly natural: damn hippie kids tramping on this turf.
Somehow, rock shows became more popular than prizefights. Scraggy, smelly misfits with names like The Golden Grasshoppers or Turdbuckle would play 15,000-seat arenas and sell those out. Afterward, all of the streets surrounding North Station smelled like pot and vomit. Maybe, he thought idly, Whitey might want to embark on public service clean-up effort. Nah, he shook his head. No money in it for him. So no Whitey.
Ah, well. It was just the V.O. talking.July 14, 2017 at 3:53 pm #104909

4 game suspension for Floyd. I can only imagine if he stayed with the Patriots it would have been 4 years.
At least a year suspension. Maybe the league figures his brutally honest coach will keep him in line.July 14, 2017 at 8:24 pm #104916
Ordway just said something very profound about sports talk radio. “…sports knowledge is the least important trait for a sports talk radio host….” Rare moment of honesty.
Or general knowledge. Look at Tanguay. He believes ISIS is a country and Allahu Ackbar is their president. But he’s got a good voice, so his lack of brain power doesn’t hurt him.July 14, 2017 at 10:05 pm #104917

I haven’t watched a hot second of baseball all year. I turned on the game tonight to watch the Sox turn bases loaded no outs top of the order into 1 run, then Sanchez hit a ball to Laconia. My apologies for those who care
