Early on in Billions when they were doing the flashbacks I thought it looked a lot like an Oceans 11/12/13 setup. Then the payoff in the final scene was exactly that. An awesome episode.

However isn’t Giamatti still out $8 million and his lawyer buddy down about $125 million? Its not like they just get that money back even if it was a setup. Seems a bit hefty just to take down a guy you hate. Wendy also shorting the stock will end up being the deal breaker. That was just too random of a scene to not mean anything. If they all go down, so does she.

I don’t know if I get Chuck’s play on Billions. So he risks his family’s entire fortune on being able to sue Axelrod to recover it, and presumably ruin Axe Capital in the process? Seems pretty risky, especially not telling his father. The guy thinks he’s ruined, he might off himself. And why would he even tell his wife about it and pretend he’s all excited about the IPO?

I forgot about the dad also losing his lifes savings. Ask the Enron investors how much money they got back.

Yeah, Chuck Sr. doubled down on the Ice Juice. Even if you think you’re going to be right in the end, that’s still pants-shitting time when you hear that Dad went all in like that. And he completely fucked his lawyer buddy too, it seems.

Not sure he cares about his father, like he probably hates that all that money is in a blind trust.  The way he ran around on his mother.  And same with his wife deep down he hates that she has all the money.  He’s pretty self righteous and likely looks at where these people end up as either a means to an end in getting Ax, or getting what they deserve.  The main guy getting fucked is Ira.

I wonder if Chuck knows Wendy slept with that guy and maybe why he sucked Wendy into this.

His dad bought more above $30 and the stock is what…under $4? That’s a serious gut punch. And will his dad and friend be cool if they ever find out that it was a Chuck setup?

Chuck still loves Wendy and its the mother of his kids. There’s no way he knew she’d be shorting the stock. I don’t think she’s ever made a stock play (that we’ve seen) during the entire series. Its going to come down to taking down Axe and also Wendy…or…I don’t know what the out would be now that they brought back the special prosecutor who will most likely be overseeing this case so it doesn’t look like more harassment from Chuck.

The whole thing seemed too far fetched.   Take Chuck, Chuck Sr & Ira out of the equation and they would have fucked over thousands of other people too?    That doesn’t seem like a very good way to get Chuck a bunch of gubernatorial votes.

Maybe on the flip side this actually helps Chuck’s chances at running. It will probably not be known to the public that he had guys spying on Axe and his folks (not that Chuck really did anything wrong in any of this) and now he can also get the sympathetic vote by going “Look…I’m just like you. I lost $8 million because of these greedy guys…” and common man is going to agree with him.

People putting the bacteria into their drinks in the middle of the public was sort of stupid however. At least go into a restroom or something so there aren’t 200 witnesses.

American Gods-Super trippy, but I really dug the first episode. The title of the episode should have been SNATCH EATS MAN.

Agree. It put the weird in weird but interesting and good enough I’ll be checking out next week too.

It’s got Ian McShane in it. Even if the rest of it sicks, he’s worth it.

Seems like his father used only Chuck’s money, so he probably doesn’t give a shit. Plus if it somehow helped him become governor, he really wouldn’t care. His buddy has a real gripe.

Is being governor worth $8 million to Chuck? How can he use “my dad blew all my blind trust money” as political capital? You would look stupid not being diversified or trusting the wrong people, wouldn’t you?

I liked the Barton Fink reference in last night’s Fargo.

In thinking about it more, which, I know, is stupid….couldn’t Chuck have pulled the exact same stunt while not investing any of his own money in the juice, thus saving himself $8 million? He seemed to go out of his way to get his dad involved and then push to get himself into the stock after first telling his buddy ‘no’. He seemingly could have done all of the same stuff without a dime of his own money in the juice.

I’m not sure I’ve ever felt so awful for a tv character like Martha on The Americans.  All alone in mid ’80s Soviet Union.  Christ.

I recognized the present day Vivian Lord as a broad Clint Eastwood was with for a while.  Turns out the younger version of Vivian Lord was portrayed by Francesca Eastwood, daughter of Clint and that actress.

So Gus Fring was always working for Don Eladio, and he wasn’t just a competitor?

Yeah I thought it was mostly Gus not being a part of the cartel but paying a tribute as the cartel ran blow and Gus ran meth in their territory.  Then Eladio wanted to basically take that over and that’s when Gus made his move to kill him and had Bosa killed.

Well I guess chuck was just on tilt with wiping out his best friend and his dad as neither was none too happy. I put the first two seasons of Billions up against any first two seasons of any show.

He definitely didn’t care – worth it.  The scene with his dad was great, as was the final scene with Axe.  I’d have to look at the scene again where his dad shows him the pics of Wendy and that guy, but seemed like it was the morning after, which wouldn’t make much sense as Wendy basically blew him off and he called first shower, so I doubt they had much of a lingering farewell outside her pad.

The fathers reaction seemed kinda strange to me. He seemed even more happy than Chuck whenever he had a chance to screw Axelrod. I thought he’d be okay with it ultimately.

I was half waiting for him to congratulate Chuck or say how impressed he was with him after Ira left.  Then again he’s completely wiped out at this point.

I like that Axelrod was out in a day for literally poisoning people, and Eric Bogosian was mopping empty hallways within a week of being charged with insider trading.

The fact that Bogosian was just hanging by himself mopping floors while on prison release bothered me from a plot perspective, but I suppose Rhodes could have made that happen behind the scenes plausibly.
