Part of the “canon” thing I have sympathy for is the complaining that you’re changing something fundamental – something that makes the character or story great in the first place.

One example (among many) is how Joel Schumacher fucked up Two-Face by making him behave just like another Joker instead of keeping the specific character traits that are trademarks of who Two-Face is.

People bitching that Snyder fucked up Superman relates to the outlook of the character and the way he behaves. They’re complaining that he’s fundamentally different from the character they fell in love with.

There’s plenty of canon changes in a lot of stories that I don’t give a shit about because they don’t monkey with what made the stuff popular in the first place.

Just don’t make Superman a dick, is all. It’s really that simple.

Watch the Zod fight from Chris Reeve 2. Horribly dated, and very goofy product placements, but the people are happy to see Superman save them. And he tries to save the people on the bus.

His weakness (which is hackishly spelled out in MoS) is that he cares about saving lives.

Snyder’s guy just doesn’t give a shit, unless it’s Lois. He even contracts out saving his own mother.

    Here’s another:

    A few things from it…

Civil War does Batman v Superman better than Batman v Superman.

Civil War does Spider-Man better than any movie since Spider-Man 2.

Civil War is the best Avengers movie.

    And..

Elizabeth Olsen still can’t settle on an accent for Scarlet Witch

New Line wants you to come and knock on its door.

The studio is in negotiations to pick up the rights to the classic television series Three’s Company, and is tapping scribes Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, the duo behind its 2009 hit He’s Just Not That Into You, to pen the screenplay.

Robert Cort, the veteran producer whose credits range from Tom Cruise’s 1980s’ Cocktail to Julia Roberts’ Runaway Bride, is attached to produce.

Well that’s taking “existing IP” to an unnecessary length.   (and I say this as a strong defender of “Threes” as we in the fan community call it)

    According to the article

New Line and the writers and producer are planning on having their feature be set in 1970s.

Captain America: Civil War at 97% so far with 35 reviews, only negative seems to be from someone who really doesn’t like Marvel much.  Between that and X-men this should be a fun month.

    No great loss, IMO.

But I would have said the same before Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant Man as well.

They have the inhumans story line on Agents of Shield. Maybe they’ll keep it there until they figure out a movie?

They’re playing it like just a delay for now, because of more movies like Spider-man being mixed in to the schedule.

Nolan put a One Direction kid in “Dunkirk?”  Fucking boo. Rest of the cast is great though – Hardy, Branagh, and Rylance.

Putting this here instead of the podcast thread, but Maron has had a really good run of directors on lately.  Rob Reiner was great, just as you would expect.

I am now listening to William Friedkin, who is a great guest.  His 1st choice for the Popeye Doyle role….Jackie Gleason.

Reiner was great. Always seems like a great guy.

Found it weird some of the movies Maron skipped over, though.

Nothing about Stand By Me or The Princess Bride?

They spoke about both of them, although briefly…pretty early on.  Reiner was in a more reflective mood, and I think that’s where they kind of got into some of the Garry Shandling memorial discussion, mortality, etc.
