How far is Gotham from Metropolis? Is it like NY to LA, or NY to Philly?

Wiki says it varied over the years, but in the Batman V Superman movie they say:

In the 2016 film <i>Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice</i>, director Zach Snyder confirmed that Metropolis and Gotham City will be portrayed as geographically situated right next to each other, on the opposite sides of a bay, similar to Oakland and San Francisco.[22]

    Wait, what?

So for board purposes it’s like Minneapolis/St. Paul and it’s Hotdish v. Sandwich Loaf: Dawn of Pot Luck

Saw Creed. Thought it was great. Lots of references to past Rocky movies but unlike in Rocky Balboa they actually weren’t forced. Not that I hated Rocky Balboa, it was okay in a tacky sort of way, but this is actually a very good movie. Good acting, good plot, good directing, the references weren’t forced and fit. Was kinda surprised actually.

Don’t you think that Mama Creed should have given Rocky the name of her financial advisor?

I’m starting to fear that the new Star Wars may suck. I hope I am wrong.

    Side by side cities? Blech.

Gotham is definitely the Oakland, and Metropolis the Sab Fran.

As much as I think ID4 is in the running for all time greatest bad movies that doesn’t look promising.

Loved The Night Before. Funny as fuck.  Enjoyed Bridge of Spies but man, we get it Spielberg — the US is a nation of laws, you don’t need to hammer it home in every movie and have your lead deliver a speech about it.  And aren’t Gitmo allegories a little fucked out by now?

I wasn’t a fan of St. Vincent namely because of that one trick pony and generally unfunny McCarthy.  That and it mostly reminded me of About A Boy.

I think so though for big reveals I think we are a bit more discerning. If we don’t want to put the SW spoilers here I think that is a good policy.

I was kinda torn whether I’d be interested in that “In The Heart of The Sea” that just came out. Trailer looked decent. But Ron Howard has been spotty at best IMO and definitely overrated by most. Not everything has been bad, but I definitely don’t consider him a top director. But I was probably leaning towards seeing it. Now reviews are mixed so I’ve swung back to leaning against. Probably doubtful now.

Didn’t they use Sabotage in the first JJ Abrams Star Tek movie, when young Kirk stole the car and drove it over the cliff?

The Hateful Eight is like every other Quentin movie since Pulp Fiction. It’s fun, but you’ll never feel the need to see it a second time.

Good news is Walton Goggins is now stealing movies instead of just TV shows.

Unless you go IMAX, regular is fine. I saw it in that RealD and I just found it annoying. But I wear glasses.

Saw the Hateful Eight in 70mm at the Coolidge Corner today.  Had an overture and a intermission and ran over 3 hours.

Enjoyed it.  As a film nerd from way back (went to school to be a film student only to change majors to marketing, one of the few regrets I have in 44 years) I like when directors go all out, and although Tarantino is an aquired taste (as well as seems to have a “I’m way smarter than you” personal) I enjoy every one of his films as this one was as good as anyone he’s done. Yes, there’s a ton of diaglog. Yes, there’s a ton of blood. Yes, there’s a ton of people saying “Nigger”.  But, that’s every Tarantino movie except for the Kill Bills and the Basturds.

I’m also a huge Paul Thomas Anderson fan. When you go, go big.  :)

I can’t begin to describe what a piece of shit The Big Short is.  On its own the story would be great. But you’ve got the precious fourth wall breakage by Gosling and the smug self-righteousness of that hack Adam Mckay and it is just an abortion.  Like totally the most out of left field thing since “you, Lt Weinberg?”  They were like “yup, and sure enough, they blamed everything on the immigrants and minorities!”  WHAT? Just out of nowhere.  So fucking weird.

Good. You helped make my decision between this or Sicario tonight.

McKay a hack? You’re singing my song.

He must have loved that he could drop the out-of-nowhere editorializing all throughout the movie, instead of confining it to graphics during the end credits like in The Other Guys.

Never seen it. But thanks to the Board, recognized the ‘Catalina Island Wine Mixer!’ line as being from that movie, and that was one of the correct answers that won my team the trivia tournament that had the trip to Chicago as the prize. So there’s that.

Saw Sicario this weekend and really loved it. Plausibility of the main plot twist is questionable but it was a really gritty, entertaining movie.

How great was this movie? So intense! Like you said, one of be characters basically becomes the Terminator at the end, but other than that, it was awesome.

Saw The Revenant. Thought it was great. As Kevin pointed out a little predictable but it is a true story or at least based on so understandable. Thought Tom Hardy was great in it. Possibly should win over Stallone. Great picture to look at as Kevin also said. This is something I wouldn’t normally notice but also thought the music added to the mood of the movie.

I guess the guy didn’t have a son, so in real life, his motivation for revenge is a little murkier.

I still can’t believe the bear was CGI. That’s must be what that audio recording of Timothy Treadwill would have looked like.

I thought Spotlight was pretty good once you figured out who the bad guys were supposed to be. (Globe reporters haha right gang?)

Typical Oscar bait for sure – not sure how Ruffalo and Mcadams garnered nominations. (Well I know how but…) He was good, but nothing remarkable. I thought she stunk. Keaton was fucking awesome.  You can’t play an underbiting liver spotted Boston mick any better than that. The accent was so understated and picked its spots. (Slattery on the other hand apparently just learned to say fahkin like Chuckie in Good Will Hunting and that’s it)

Could have done without the “hey we’re all to blame!” stuff – though it would have been more effective (or truthful I guess) if they’d mentioned how the Globe gave credence to the whole “reformed pedo” treatment movement in the 90s.

Also so typical the big crisis of faith is Rachel Mcadams a lapsed Catholic becoming…more lapsed?

Very well done though. Trigger warning: Curse of Bambino and baseball fagolaism abound.  Mentioned on Twitter that the newsroom erupting in laughter at the question “when’s the Pats home opener?” was something only this board would appreciate. It wasn’t played to be a jab, but could certainly be read that way.

I enjoyed Spotlight but cannot see McAdams winning anything.  She didn’t move the needle.  Ruffalo was good but I thought his character was pretty 1 dimensional.  We get it, you work.  All the time.  His Bruce Banner had more depth and he was a cartoon half the movie.

You nailed Keaton though.  He made the movie.  Slattery always seems to play Slattery.

Agree with both of you. It’s very well made, and it seems like the type of movie that wins Best Picture. At least it has something to say, unlike say The Revenant.

It would be crazy if it wins Best Director, though, as there’s very little style to it.

Can’t believe Ruffalo and McAdams got nominations and Keaton didn’t. I found Ruffalo to be doing some weird affectation that annoyed me. I loved the scene where Keaton basically undercuts Ruffalo’s Oscar bait speech by saying “alright settle down, I’m the boss here.”

McAdams doesn’t do anything special, though she does get the best scene in the movie, at the door of that priest with dementia.
