Rewatching Jaws and on the 4th of July weekend why is the Mayor so fucking concerned people aren’t swimming? They are on the island. That’s the important part. As a matter of fact, if they’re in the water they aren’t spending $

There are clearly reporters on the island because of the shark story (Benchley’s cameo). Any news reports or footage where nobody is swimming out of fear – despite insistence from Vaughn that the shark had been caught and killed – is bad publicity for the rest of the summer.

As we know, the oily, political SOB was thinking about August, too.

With all due respect to BBtL, A Few Good Men was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Over-written; over-acted; over-wrought. I laughed out loud at the courtroom scenes. Think about this for a moment: Demi Moore plays a hard-bitten Navy lawyer. Seriously. Dissecting plot structure in that movie is like dissecting plot structure in Happy Gilmore.

Worst movies ever? Come on now. And I don’t have even the slightest idea what you mean by “hard-bitten”….she was supposed to be something of a buffoon who had little experience or skill at a core aspect of her job. I thought she did a pretty good job portraying it. By no means a great movie and with flaws, but entertaining and iconic from that era.

Ghostbusters was terrible. On the positive front, I had forgotten how good movies are in IMAX.

7 year old daughter loved it, 11 year old son seemed meh at anything besides the cooler ghosts.  Mrs liked it a little and I thought it sucked.  I might be done with Feig’s movies for a while, he was a shitty choice to direct that cast.  Really looking forward to Star Trek Beyond next week though, seeing it in full Imax now that we’re in a real city again.

    What a decade of movies.

Trying to figure out when it will be appropriate to show my 8 year old kids Jaws and Rocky. I was 10 when I saw Jaws. Definitely have been freaked out about the ocean ever since. My son seems to be at least half fag, so I don’t want him tippy toe-ing down to the water and running back waving his arms in the air like he’s dancing to “It’s raining men”.

We saw “Secret Life of Pets”  last week in Randolph. Those recline seats are awesome. Not as many moulies there as I remember either.

There’s no way Ghostbusters is good but the faggy reviewers are in fear of being seen as anti-broad so they’re doing their part.

Well the nerds got angry, so something something sexism. Because those guys love when their childhood movies are redone. It’s just like the sexist nerds who hated the Star Wars prequels because of Obi-Wan and Anakin and Windu.

When the trailer came out, the movie company (Sony I think) was caught removing critical posts based on real critique from the official web page and leaving all the mouth breather posts. They have stoked the fire of the sexism argument for their own good. In other words, fuck em.

Was watching a bunch of trailers between speakers last night and missed that one.

I did catch the Justice League one where Batman says “So you can talk to fish?” Ugh.

I also like the thought process behind Skull Island. “Look we know you don’t need another King Kong movie, but Brie Larson is pretty! Okay what if we put Loki in it? How about Goodman and Sam Jackson, is that enough?”

I think that was Bruce just being a smart ass.

I didn’t know they were doing another Kong movie until that trailer popped up in my FB timeline. Apparently it has nothing to do with the Peter Jackson remake from a decade ago and is in the same universe as the Godzilla movie from a couple of years ago. This is setting up for a King Kong vs. Godzilla movie around 2019/2020.

Way, way late on this but has anyone seen John Wick?  I got it because I had heard good things, and the bluray was under 10 bucks.  Finally got around to watching it a couple weekends back.  So much fun.  Like the vibe of a Death Wish but with an updated noir.

Not much story to speak of, but just fun start to finish.

Yeah, worried about the sequel they’re making though.  Hopefully it bucks the trend of surprisingly good films and is good.

Watched Black Mass for the first time last night.  Not fantastic but, unlike most, I’d give a thumbs up.

Surprised that they didn’t have the liquor store at the rotary featured; also, the Valhalla part seemed shoehorned into the plot.

I had such low expectations after the reviews I liked it. It’s not rewatchable to any extent but unlike Kevin I thought Edgerton was better than Depp.

Yeah, I want to watch it again.  That scene in the nightclub/bathhouse place is Matrix rescuing Morpheus type stuff.

Oof. Mary Todd had more fun at Our American Cousin.

“Suicide Squad is bad. Not fun bad. Not redeemable bad. Not the kind of bad that is the unfortunate result of artists honorably striving for something ambitious and falling short. Suicide Squad is just bad. It’s ugly and boring, a toxic combination that means the film’s highly fetishized violence doesn’t even have the exciting tingle of the wicked or the taboo. (Oh, how the movie wants to be both of those things.) It’s simply a dull chore steeped in flaccid machismo, a shapeless, poorly edited trudge that adds some mildly appalling sexism and even a soupçon of racism to its abundant, hideously timed gun worship. But, perhaps worst of all, Suicide Squad is ultimately too shoddy and forgettable to even register as revolting. At least revolting would have been something.

    — In scene after scene after SCENE, writer/director David Ayer leans on well-worn pop/rock tunes to augment the clichéd shots of the Suicide Squad walking in tandem, the Suicide Squad creating mayhem, the Suicide Squad, um, trying on wardrobe options. “Spirit in the Sky” by Norman Greenbaum? AGAIN?

Seems half true at best. People liked the trailer (not me, I couldn’t give a a shit about such minor characters) but supposedly every joke from the movie was in there.

The reshoots were supposed to make it funnier like the trailer. If they left it as joyless as BvS, it probably still would be hated.

Kinda scary thing that SS points out is that Rogue One also had to go back for reshoots after the original cut.

So now until Decemeber we have to believe that not all reshoots are bad.

I didn’t see people hating Suicide Squad as much or more than BvS coming. I thought it was going to be average at worst, like X-Men: Apocalypse.

In 5-10 years Marvel will probably get around to making its villains-turned-heroes concept The Thundetbolts into a movie and make it work.

Watched a documentary on demand off Xfinity called “Zero Days” Thought it was really great and fascinating. Its about the stuxnet virus which somebody attacked the Iranian nuclear program with in the late 2000 and early 2010s. Its pretty widely accepted we did it thru the CIA and NSA in conjunction with the Israelis. I thought about putting this post in the political forum, but whether you think this was a good thing or bad thing the project was started under Bush and expanded under Obama so their policy was essentially the same. The movie takes the position I think in its leanings its a bad thing and puts the blame more on Obama than Bush. Though Bush started it, it was discovered under Obama after he expanded it (though it puts more blame on the Israelis than Obama whats happened since).

I wasn’t as interested in the blame game than the topic in general. Obviously its relevant with the recent news of the Russian hacking. But it brings up a whole debate over even using this stuff to begin with and letting it leak to the rest of the world who can then turn it on us (and have moral justification arguments for doing so since we used it). In the end we destroyed about 20% of Iran’s centrifuges and caused maybe a one year delay in their program with this project, so its definitely debateable whether it was worth it.

In any event, definitely a good watch. No idea if its on Netflix I paid the $7 bucks on demand before I even thought of looking but it might be. One final thought there is a supposed NSA source who appears digitally altered throughout the movie. Had questions throughout whether she was legit NSA or some crazy person who conned the director. I think she’s legit though. Even with alteration, she essentially can still be seen and is basically a real life version of Carrie Matheson in appearance and demeanor and the whole of what she’s saying which caused me to think this is all a fraud for awhile. But there is a big reveal at the end that makes me think she’s real and for whatever reason the intelligence community wanted the real story out there similar to how they gave Bigelow access on Zero Dark Thirty so they could get their collective Hollywood high five. This is directed by the guy who did the Enron doc and some other good ones. Definitely an interesting watch.
