scroll through the pictures here and  you’ll find the Goodfellas prison feast at the ACI

I hear things like the whole operation being run out of a coin-o-matic or the Dungeon Master mobster bashing a dude in the head with a 25 lb weight in prison and realize that maybe Goodfellas isn’t all that hollywood-ized.

I like that one minute the narrator is describing a guy literally blown in half by multiple shotgun blasts, and the next minute he’s talking about the Blue Apron meal he made of seared chicken and chickpeas in a balsamic reduction.

first episode of Crimetown was promising, especially if you aren’t as familiar with the sordid details of my fair city’s past  😆

Chico, you heard of this?  Two thumbs up.

I’m on the looong list of people awaiting it from the library      Now, given my exalted status, I could pull a couple of strings and jump to the top of the list, but I don’t want to shatter people’s faith in public employees

Gee. Groing up in Medford, I thought the Depositor’s Trust was the only safe box burglary.

There was a book about that but it also wrapped in the Civil Service exam scandal too: https://www.amazon.com/Cops-Are-Robbers-Convicted-Corruption/dp/0933341709

I assumed Crimetown would detail Buddy’s slow-moving incremental fall from mob prosecutor to corrupt mayor.

Nope, he happily tied himself to he mafia even before his first inauguration.

Buddy (allegedly, but likely) raped a woman while in law school.  He was a bastard from the jump, he just did what was expedient.  For a minute, it meant being a reform-minded prosecutor.  He figured as the best-off (son of a dr) best educated guy from Silver Lake he’d eventually be accepted by the moneyed East Side; he was wrong.

Started listening to a bad music podcast called That Awful Sound. Each episode is about one song+video from our youth.  Surprisingly there is 90 minutes of material in just one song. Heard so far episodes on the Offspring, Smash Mouth, and Aerosmith. Recommend to anyone who likes similar bad movie podcasts.

Learned from a Merlin Mann podcast that if you put SS in front of YOUTUBE on a page with a video, you can download the video for free.  In other words…www.SSyoutube.com/hjff8657

Spent the evening downloading all of the Pats’ AMERICA’S GAMEs, as well as DO YOUR JOB.

Anybody listen to Black List Table Reads? Readings of unproduced movie scripts. It looks like Eearwolf added it in the last six months to its podcasts, but by the number of episodes it must have been around a while longer.

Celeritas is fantastic. It’s such a crisp script. Terrible Parents was also well done.

Even that felt like half an episode.

We’ll tell you how he got caught…someday.

Kennedy’s goon was the first guy in 10 episodes where I never even heard the name before…and the reason?

It’s like Warwick’s version of the Japanese soldiers hidden in the hills still fighting WWII 10 years later.  Very insular place.

Crimetown finally skeeved me out, but it wasn’t about a murder or cutting up a body.

It was the old lady today saying “… and that night we became lovers”.

Meanwhile have you ever listened to Cracked? Its the magazine’s podcast. This week its Recent Race Riots You’ve Never Heard About with the Dollup guys give a rundown on Boston Busing. Not sure how long that segment is as the footnotes reference a bunch of other stories

Yes. It’s the neverending discussions you have in Freshman year of college about stuff you just learned enshrined in podcast form.

That’s not to say I don’t listen when the topic interests me.

re: the RISDIC episode of crimetown.  Pretty sure I’ve posted this before but I worked for Mollicone’s son Joey for a couple of years (bouncer/bartender).  Really good guy, and benefited not a whit from his old man poaching 13 mil.  In fact, the bar he owned (Providence College bar) was really the only one in the neighborhood that strictly carded, but we’d still get raided from time to time.  Other places down the street were well known spots for freshmen/sophomores, left alone.

I met Arlene Violet at a party a couple of years ago.  She is a pisser and a really good, genuine person.  One of the rare ones who does it for the right reasons.

Just started S-Town, from the folks that do This American Life and Serial.  3 Episodes in and I really dig it.

Anyone still on crimetown?  The Plunder Dome episode is good.  I had some work done at my house by JKL engineering (Freitas’ company) and dealt with him a bit, he’s a trip.  Nice guy but the fuse seems to be perpetually lit.  When I saw the pictures on the crimetown site of David Ead’s vending machine “business” I almost shit.  Of course that guy is laundering money!  That place has looked abandoned since as long as I can remember, at least 25-30 years.  I remember that Veryfine sign being up long after you saw any of the product in stores

I liked Crimetown, but it felt like it could have been much better.

All the weeks off and and the lack of an overall narrative kinda dragged it down. It just kinda jumped around from week to week with separate stories. And half hour episodes are too short.

A lot of my interest derived from Providence being a half hour from my house. If the next season is about like Louisville, KY, I don’t know if Id bother.

Still, hard to complain about free entertainment while driving to work.

I bailed on it. The lack of narrative was the problem for sure. S-Town was way better and even that was lacking – the focus shifted four times.

Obviously I stuck it out but agree with Kevin that without a local angle it would be tough to retain interest.  The only hint towards cohesion was it was bookending it with Buddy’s first victory/death.  The “remember X, from episode 2?” stuff had to be annoying to someone who didn’t know who these people were

The Dollop put out a book – The United States of Absurdity

Got a copy today (2 actually, only charged for one) and it’s a good mix of stories from both the podcast and new ones with illustrations for each.  Well worth the $12 if you’re f an of the show.
