What’s a Rogue One spoiler? If someone doesn’t die?

If you believe reddit, it’s that the Jews run the empire too.

Deaths, surprise cameos, callbacks, callforwards (?), the ending.

    My guesses:
    – Vader kills Krennic and one of the posse
    – I thought the whole time that there would be no tie-in to the ST at all. However, Edwards made some vague comment that could be interpreted as having a tie-in. I wonder if it is like the blind guy is the lone survivor and passing on some kind of Jedi knowledge stuff to Lor San Tekka.
    – Does Jyn die? I go with yes.
    – Emperor seen? Hologram form maybe.
    – Tarkin? Yes. Livia Soprano form.
    – R2 and 3PO? Yes.
    – Seems to be conventional wisdom that the ending will be something with the transmission going through or Leia from a distance or from behind. That makes sense and is what I have thought but maybe they go for something bigger.

Other tie-in: Like maybe Jedha is destroyed/cleaned out of crystals and they’re like “well there’s other kyber crystals to be mined….on Jakku.”

I think all of the Rogue One rebels die.

I think we’ll see Wedge Antilles in some form and maybe some Jimmy Smits as well.

The only Skywalker involved will be Vader.

There will be much more of a clue as to who Rey’s parents are than we’d expect. Not enough to give it away, but a gentle nudge in that direction

Mads Mikkelsen will creep everyone the fuck out. Even Darth will be unnerved at what a wacko that guy is.

There will be some set up to the Han Solo movie.  No Falcon or Han, but maybe Chewie.

There is a fleet action in one of the commercials, so Wedge would be a safe bet, maybe Biggs too

Porkins is more than we could ask for.

Smits was in the trailer so he’s definitely there. Wedge, Biggs, or Porkins is a good call.

I honestly don’t think the movie can be done with enough emotional pitch without Leia at the end in some form.

How would you in some way allude to Rey’s parentage without it being overt Marvel post credit fan service?

Early reviews are very positive.  Apparently some scenes in the trailers aren’t in the final film.  And there are several surprises.

It’s shocking how good the reviews are considering the story of reshoots and how the studio was worried about the first cuts.

Also, sounds like Vader is barely in it, but the part he is in is awesome.

Only at 84%.  Not reading the reviews but tepid reviews look to be from the likes of the Village Voice, Indiewire, and that fagola Will Leitch at the New Republic. So it’s probably badass.

There is a subset of Star Wars fans out there who seem pre-disposed to hating it no matter what.  Because the world is full of assholes i guess?

There’s also a subset that will like it no matter what. These are the people who defend the PT. And your theory doesn’t square with TFA getting 90+%.

You’re right, just had a fervent group of online acquaintances that have been shitting all over this one since the first trailer.  Can’t wait to see it on Friday myself.

I have been pessimistic since the re-shoots. I hope it is great. My expectation is that it will be very good.

Put it this way – the TFA trailer looked amazing – best trailer I have ever seen next to Private Ryan. I don’t get that from R1. At all.

There is something to the SJW-ness of force feeding another female lead, IMO. I don’t think she will work. Rey? She’s fantastic. I thought she was the best part of TFA, a wonderful character. I don’t think Felicity Jones will resonate based merely on the acting chops shown in the trailers.

Something about her beaver teeth have always rubbed me the wrong way.  But yeah the trailers while good haven’t hit that feeling that TFA had.  Though I wish the actual music from it was in the movie.

It was very good. Not great. I wanted to like it more.

    – I don’t care about non-stop action so the Bay-esk explosions did nothing for me.

    – Very little in the way of character development. You see Luke looking at the twin suns and you get it – you understand the entire story engine. None of that here.

    – Krennic wasn’t evil or menacing. A good performance but not iconic.

    – K2SO was funny but it bordered on doing schtick

    -Galen engineered the flaw

    – The CGI on Tarkin is crazy good. He had a ton of screen time but almost looked like a lizard person.  Still, as good as it can be. Just a dusting of Livia Soprano.

    – Vader has a fortress on Mustafar. Showed him in a healing tank like Luke used in ESB.

    – JEJ’s voice is shot

    – using a corvette to bash two star destroyers into each other to make them crash? Badass.

    – 3Po and R2 cameo is forced and awkward. Probably the low point

    – the last ten minutes make the movie. Vader goes off and the Leia CGI is awesome. And traditional end credits after no oepning crawl.

Bail Organa was great I thought. Original Red and Gold Leaders.  Red 5 bites it. Evazan and Doctor Cornelius from Mos Eisley were there. Forrest Whittaker was bad.

Taking half the brood on Sunday afternoon.  My 20-year-old works overnights all week including Fri/Sat so he asked me to hold off until he can go.  I had no intentions of going to this opening weekend but at this point I am a moth to the flame.

Based on ITT’s minute review I am now looking forward to it more than before.

Just got out of it. Really enjoyed it.  I must’ve missed it but I have no idea how Jyn got the plans from the rebel captain during the climb up the tower. He saved them from falling and then she somehow had them.

lots of stuff from the trailers missing.  Chirrut was the best character.

So Vader sees the plans get handed to the   Tantine but however many minutes later he’s asking Captain Antilles where the “plans he intercepted” are? (Not to mention the already existing inconsistency in ANH around “conjuring up the stolen data plans”)

Saw it tonight. Thought it was great. Actually better than I expected. I think in a way more of a war movie than any other in the franchise.

I’d agree with everything ITT said above.

I went with my 7 and 10 year old. They wanted more lightsaber battles, but I knew that wasn’t happening from the jump.

Chirrut was my favorite as well.

They didn’t do a great job creating characters. They spend so much time building up Jyn that there is no time to develop Cassian, Krennic, Chirrut, etc.

My 7 yr old thought CGI Leia was rather “freckle-y”. But Tarkin was amazing.  I didn’t get the Livia Soprano stuff because it was better CGI. If anything it felt like an amazing video game.

The CGI Gold and Red leader was outstanding. And the death of Red 5… good stuff.

The scene with Vader getting cleaned up was pretty wild, and we’re supposed to think the guy speaking with him was Snoke, right?

I kind of liked the war movie approach. Seemed like a new take on what is a series about war. It’s not all politics and mysticism, right?

Was Forrest Whitaker’s Saw supposed to be a bit senile? I couldn’t figure out what he was going for, and we spend some time setting up the split within the rebels only to lose it 15 minutes later? Huh?

I’d also go with an A-, but it is surely a step back from Episode VII and IV-VI. Someone said that Edwards doesn’t know how to develop characters and I’d agree, but it was a very enjoyable movie that every Star Wars fan must see.

Really dug it. Better than I thought it would be. Expectations for these films are ridiculous, but this movie seemed to do its own thing. Wore the Star Wars badge worthily.

Tarkin and XXXX were interesting but not wasted at all.

I loved where they dropped the end. VERY Cool.

Also dug that there was no crawl. The one for TFA kind of sucked.

Not Snoke. That was a human who wasn’t seven feet tall.

One other gripe – the planet jumping at the beginning was terrible. Not to mention chryon usage.

Funniest moment was Jyn leading the mission to Scarif saying “may the force be with us” and Chirrut basically orgasming in the stolen ship.

Interesting theory on Snoke. I read somewhere that that guy has a name but who knows. Bacta tank scene and Vader / Krennic was my favorite scene up until the choke pun, which was the single worst moment of the movie. Vader has jokes? Ugh.

Look, I came home and the Gungan war scene of phantom menace was on TNT. R1 is Citizen Kane in comparison.

going soon, taking kid so of course the wife is worried the Star Wars movie will feature hard core porn, I assured her the PG-13 is only for violence

she also apparently likes Star Wars now so she can be upset she isn’t going, she’s never seen a Star Wars movie in the theatre but can’t let that stop the complaining

I don’t understand liking R1 more than TFA. One is like an actual Skywalker story with actual characters. I don’t even know that I’d listen to an argument for Jedi and I generally think that movie is a piece of Lucasian shit.

It’s close, for sure. I put Rogue 1 percentage points ahead because 1) it’s an original story (TFA was basically a rehash of IV-I’m OK with that but it wasn’t original) 2) SPOILER They kill everyone 3) Badass Vader and 4) they drop it right as IV would begin. That’s some clever shit.

Honestly, looking at it now I could have TFA and Rogue One in a dead heat.

The movie whose plot was directly derived from the crawl of the original is less derivative than one with an original story we’ve never seen?

Whatever similarities there were (parentless 20 year old on a desert planet with latent force abilities, super-weapon,droid with info) the callbacks were at least plot driven.  R1 was kind of like “hey look, Red and Gold Leader…using the same footage of them from ANH.” And it was ancillary to driving the story.

And that’s before getting to the deep connection established with Rey and Finn and to a lesser extent Poe. As fan service and the necessity of making it accessible for Asian markets I think it accomplished far more all with having a much deeper emotional hook. Maybe if the order of release were reversed I’d feel differently but I doubt it. Vader killing people for a minute and a half was great but other than Leia I don’t think there was a legitimate goosebump moment.

Happy Tarkin came off as well as he did, very important to the story and amusingly ruthless and he closes the plot hole re: why none of that Imperial equipment appears in 4-6

Vader’s appearance meshes so well with his appearance in 4
