Reviving the sports wagering thread with an anecdote more than a request for guidance.

I was in Vegas last week and signed a friend of mine up for the Westgate Las Vegas Super Contest ($1500 NFL 5-game pick ’em pool that all the big sharks enter; you pay an additional $300 or so for a proxy to show up at the LV Hilton Westgate and actually submit your picks). Had to use my name, social security number, etc. to enter. My dummy friend forgets to get his picks in this morning by the deadline so I ended up throwing in picks for him on about 10 minutes notice. Makes me nervous now. Realistically, I can’t imagine he’ll finish in the money but I didn’t pay $1500 for a reason.

    Here’s what I picked:

    Dolphins -2.5
    Rams +4
    Cardinals -2.5
    Chargers -3
    Ravens +4.5

So I consider myself a fairly recreational/borderline but not quite there degenerate gambler. I like playing football, sometimes play basketball, occasionally have fooled around with over/unders in the NHL. But mostly stick to football. More often college over the NFL because I think I do better at college but I play both. I usually play 4-5 games a weekend, sometimes more, sometimes not at all. Stick to around $100 to $200 a game. That’s about it. My rough calculations are I’m somewhere around a break even gambler. That’s about it. So really its just a passtime. Not winning much, not losing much. But it is fun when you do get on one of those rolls and make a withdrawal for a little extra money. That little bit of money for whatever reason always seemed more enjoyable than much more money earned working.

I have found FanDuel actually curtailed my gambling a bit. Playing $50 or whatever a weekend seemed to satisfy my gambling needs to the point some weekends I didn’t even feel the need to gamble at all. That combined with the hassle of trying to make deposits at offshore places, I haven’t done as much as say maybe 5 years ago.

But I was still playing some this year and by my calculation was down somewhere around $2,000 for the season in November. Had a hot weekened, won about $1,000 back and withdrew it. Decided to sit at that point until Bowl season which some years I’ve had good luck at.

So before the first bowl games two weekends ago deposited $165 and bet it on the first game. Arizona-New Mexico I believe. That first day won all 5 bowl games and 1 over/under I played to make me 6-0 the first Saturday. My luck hasn’t stopped since then. Played every single Bowl game and probably hit around 90% of them right. Some over/unders too so had 2 bets on some games. As my bank roll has grown I expanded into playing some college basketball and some NBA. Pretty good luck there the last two weeks too.

As I woke up this morning after hitting both Wisconsin and the Under late last night my balance had grown from $165 to $4,568  I think maybe because my bank roll has grown I’ve been able to pretty much play everything I had an opinion on its helped me. In other words, maybe I’m decent sort of in a big picture way but when I have a limited bank roll and have to narrow it down to a few games I’m not that good? Or maybe I’ve just been shit lucky the last two weeks? I tend to think that.

I’m not an ITT gambler in terms of I don’t follow systems or know a lot of advanced metrics. I am not total gut and eye test either though. I do try to take the time to research definitely all this season’s scores and results, injuries, player/coach background and look into past years a bit too. At least try to anyways before placing a bet but sometimes just don’t have as much time to be thorough. I’ve been pretty good this run of looking at every score, even the NBA games (mostly doing over/unders), I’ve played and try to fit it into where the teams are today.

Anyways, its been fun to get on a good roll like this when you’re basically a low money gambler. Had hot runs in cards before but this is the hottest sports run I can recall though I did make a lot on the first Pats Soupey money line but that was just a one off deal where I won money on the AFCCG and let it ride on the Soupey money line rather than an extended run.

Nah, I’m cashing out Monday. Gonna play all the bowl games thru Saturday and maybe a bit of NFL Sunday and I’m out. I’ll make another deposit in a week (of around $200 again) for the playoffs but I want to cash in here. I just re-did my bathroom and it cost me $6,000 so this is a nice unexpected offset. Gonna try to be a bit careful next three days not to bet too much either in case I get cold.

By the way bookmaker.eu has become awesome for withdrawals. Last few times I’ve withdrawn from them requested on a Monday and had a check by FedEx on Wednesday or Thursday latest.

I have found bookmaker.eu to be excellent and I’m a former bovada user who left tired of spotty service.

reviving this for the playoffs, please post your thoughts. As always, I know nothing, this is how I feel/Mazz

HOU (-3.5) 36.5  lowest o/u I’ve seen in a while, seems to be asking for over action.  Short of defensive scores, don’t know how either team is scoring much.  Prediction- Hou 17-10. May place a small bet on under, otherwise staying away

SEA (-8) 43.5  I don’t see how Detroit wins, but don’t love over a TD spread.  Don’t feel great about betting it though.  Like the over better.  Seattle 27-21

PIT (-10) 46.5   I think the easiest game of the weekend, at least spread wise.  Big number might be to dissuade some away from a public team like Pittsburgh.  No real feel for o/u here.  Steelers roll 34-17

GB(-4.5) 45  GB seems to be up their own azzhole all the time, and hosting the team that has beat them twice on their own field could fck them up.  Upset of the weekend- Giants 24-21 (yes, calling for a push on the total  )

 ended up going 2-1 on the weekend by not referring to my own post ( U 48 in the PIT game, GB- 4.5) left Seattle alone, was too pissed about the early game

Anything today? Probably go Atlanta -4.5  or 5   Hate betting a pats line like this because don’t want to be disappointed in a 28-13 win

Like Atlanta but that number is tricky.

    So of no help.

You’re getting TDs but drives are eating up tons of clock (obviously). One team will get impatient.

That miracle win emboldened me to lay 16. Going 2/2 is going to inspire some real nonsense today
