It redeemed itself at the end, but man it dragged in the middle. The casino shit especially. And everything on Jedi Island that wasn’t Rey and Kylo communing was pretty pointless. I think I disagree with everyone on Luke and Yoda. I kept thinking “I should be feeling something here, but I don’t.” I found myself hoping Hayden Christensen showed up.
Yesterday being part of “StarWars Weekend” on TBS, I was exposed to quite a bit of the prequels. They’re still too ILM and overly concerned with the backgrounds and architecture, but there are some good character bits, almost all of them courtesy of Ewan MacGregor (and Liam Neeson). Hayden Christenson (and Natalie Portman) DID show up. You’d regret that wish coming true.December 17, 2017 at 9:45 pm #115822

I saw it. I enjoyed it in the theater, but now I’m pissed about Luke. He was going to kill Ben Solo in his sleep?
I know the movie was 2.5 hours, but it moved fast – too fast to give appropriate context to Luke’s lapsed-catholic behavior. I know the board disfavors exposition, but the movie spent 10 minutes freeing horses and 5 rushing through Luke “creating” Kylo Ren.
Jyn Erso noticing hyperspace tracking technology is a nice easter egg.December 18, 2017 at 8:40 am #115839
He was going to do it for half a second. (From a certain point of view)December 18, 2017 at 9:46 am #115854
Hey, want to join me, rule the galaxy together and perhaps bang?
BTW, your parents were drunken trash.December 18, 2017 at 1:44 pm #115938
Luke’s footprints don’t kick up the red salt? Cool detail.December 18, 2017 at 3:04 pm #115955
I could’ve done without Luke drinking the green stuff from the dinosaur tits.December 18, 2017 at 3:12 pm #115961
Maybe my timing is off, but didn’t the Supremacy get cut in half before the First Order showed up with walkers and mini death star stuff on Crait? Hyperspacing that fucker in half was cool, but obviously hunger games coach should’ve flown into the part of the ship where all the important stuff was.December 18, 2017 at 9:31 pm #115980
The more I think about it, I like it more than when I first walked out of the theater.
I kinda hated that the Resistance didn’t get a big win at the end. And I hated the brook kid, as it felt pretty hokey and cloying. But the more I thought about it, that’s the point. They’re so small now that they literally all fit on the Falcon. But maybe not literally that kid, but they new Resistance is still in the process of growing up. I would expect there to be a time jump where the Resistance grows back into a respectable force, and “Leia has died” to in the opening crawl.
Stuff I hated:
-Pretty much everything on Jedi Island was boring. Especially the Dark Side asshole.
-Kinda thought Finn would die there at the end. I don’t mind the character, but his plot with Rose was nearly completely meaningless. And the casino part served no purpose. Like Chico says, why do you need Benicio Del Toro for that part?
-For the main character, Rey didn’t do much outside the Snoke scene. Her big save at the end is lifting a bunch of rocks?
-They’re wasting Oscar Isaac. At least he’s got the “best pilot we’ve got” stuff for him, and even if it seems like BB8 does a lot of the flying work.
-Small part but Maz Kanata doing action stuff sucks. Isn’t she supposed to be hundreds of years old? It’s Yoda doing backflips bad.
Stuff I liked:
-The 12 year old in me will always love the Falcon swooping in and taking out TIE Fighters. That whole Crait battle was amazing.
-Loved the Snoke stuff. I mean, Kylo Ren has to kill him, but to do it in the second movie and STILL be the bad guy subverts expectations. Plus the battle with the guards was the best scene in the move.
-I didn’t think I would be into it, but I really like that Rey’s parents are nothing. Though it seems like a big FU to JJ Abrams. As does tossing the lightsaber.
-Adam Driver is the MVP. Every scene he’s in is good.
I have to wonder if they planned on a Leia/Kylo scene and scrapped it. I know she says he’s dead to her, but he’s right there. I kinda thought that’s what they were going for when she told the others to follow Poe out of the cave. I guess I don’t know how it ends. They’ve already ended a movie with him killing a parent. Sucks that they’ll never be one now.December 18, 2017 at 10:24 pm #115982
Agreed on del toro. And with the earlier comments being confused how he knew the whole escape plan when Finn and Rose probably didn’t even know.
Wonder if he has some larger part to play in the next one? If not they should’ve just gone with Peter Stormare there.December 18, 2017 at 11:51 pm #115984

He overheard Poe telling it to Finn on their ship on the way to the First Order ship. I liked it a lot, interested to see where Abrams takes it to finish. Also very excited to see what Rian Johnson will do with his own story and characters for 3 movies.December 19, 2017 at 9:34 am #115987

Luke’s footprints don’t kick up the red salt? Cool detail.
Yup. Loved that.
Also loved Luke’s “See ya around, kid” to Ren.December 19, 2017 at 4:27 pm #116031
Suck cum, chum. Merry Christmas. I’ll ad in some negatives, like most the casino/Finn stuff was pointless and unnecessary. Why have an admiral be the one to suicide run? Snoke dying fine, but zero backstory about him isn’t great.

My script idea for Episode IX:
KYLO REN is sitting in his throne room.
LUKE SKYWALKER Force ghosts in, taking him by surprise.
LUKE: “Told you I’d see you around”.
(Lightning bolt strikes KYLO, killing him instantly.)
END CREDITS.December 19, 2017 at 9:07 pm #116048
Finn totally should have fucking died.December 21, 2017 at 7:50 am #116174
The Dark Side asshole 😆
I thought that was Kylo Ren’s sister, Hope.December 21, 2017 at 8:40 pm #116222
Wait, aren’t the Knights of Ren, whoever they are, at the destruction of Luke’s training facility?December 21, 2017 at 9:47 pm #116223
Just saw it. First half was slow, really liked the second half. Laura Dern is always distracting to me, she just plays Laura Dern. I liked that Luke appeared to Kylo as he last saw him with the shorter, dark beard.December 24, 2017 at 12:48 am #116324
So the resistance fleet is 3 ships yet the first order has ships that dwarf super star destroyers?
Up until Luke it took decades to train someone in the ways of the Force, Luke carried Yoda on his back through the swamp and became one. Rey listened to 2 stories and is now one?
Wouldnt Finn and Rose simply be taken to the detention block and interrogated instead of the main hanger?
Fuck the Jedi, all they do is run away and hide.
Two thumbs down from this addressDecember 26, 2017 at 9:48 am #116389
So…why couldn’t two of the Star Destroyers hyperspace to a point 30 or so light-seconds ahead of the Rebel cruiser? Or were they also for the first time in eight movies concerned about fuel consumption?January 2, 2018 at 7:33 am #116651
Just saw it.
Mostly positive. The good stuff is really good, and makes the bad stuff bearable.
I will say that I’m OK with Snoke not having an important backstory. How often does it happen in actual world history that some ego-driven, nutty dickhead like Hitler shows up from nowhere and is just the right person at the right time to exploit cultural sentiments and a power vacuum? There’s always a guy like that.
Force-ghost Luke in IX seems like an obvious thing and I hope it’s handled well.May 28, 2018 at 9:19 pm #124781
